Leg cramps are actually very common during pregnancy and affect almost up to half of women. It's especially common at night. A lot of women think "oh, it's because I'm low on potassium. I'm going to eat lots of bananas." or, a lot of people have heard, too, "if I'm low on calcium and drink more milk, that will help." But there's no evidence to prove that these things help. There really is no good explanation as to why it happens. But when it does happen, you can try massaging your calves, stretching them out, walking around just try to avoid pointing your toes when you stretch because that can kind of exasperate it and make it worse. It's really important though, to pay attention to the type of pain you're feeling. If it changes from just being a cramp to like a persistent ache, if you notice that one foot or the other is more swollen, if you notice that it's hot or cold to the touch, if you develop a fever sometimes people even notice a red, tender spot on their calf or even like a palish, blue spot. These can all be symptoms of a deep vein thrombosis, or a blood clot that's forming deep in the veins of your legs. This can be life threatening. So if you have any of these symptoms, it would be best to bring them up with your doctor or seek medical attention immediately. Up to 60 percent of adults have had nocturnal leg cramps. Nocturnal leg cramps are involuntary muscle contractions that occur in the calves, or soles of the feet, during the night. Leg cramps are painful and Generally temporary and non-damaging, lasting several seconds to minutes. It can cause significant pain and a paralysis-like immobility. Exercise research suggests that muscle fatigue is a primary cause of leg cramps. Night cramps can be normal at late stage of pregnancy. In other cases it is associated with physical activity, exercise or overexertion, age (common in older adults), lack of electrolytes, such as magnesium, potassium and sodium. Prolonged sitting or laying reduced blood flow. Muscle fatigue can be considered one of the most important risk factor. Rarely muscle cramps may be a sign of a motor neuron disorder like lateral amyotrophic sclerosis and multiple sclerosis, but such cases are rare. Some other Medical conditions can be associated with leg cramps are cardiovascular disease, hemodialysis, cirrhosis, pregnancy, and lumbar canal stenosis. Other conditions that can mimic night cramps include: restless legs syndrome, claudication, myositis, and peripheral neuropathy. All of them can be differentiated through careful history and physical examination. Management. Gentle stretching and massage, putting some pressure on the affected leg by walking or standing, or taking a warm bath or shower may help to end the cramp. If the cramp is in the calf muscle, dorsiflexing the foot will stretch the muscle and provide almost immediate relief. There is limited evidence supporting the use of magnesium, calcium channel blockers, carisoprodol, and vitamin B12. Based on this first large, representative study, Nocturnal Leg Cramps occurring 5x per month are reported by 6% of the adult US population. Sleep disturbance symptoms and health conditions are associated with higher frequency of Nocturnal Leg Cramps, suggesting that Nocturnal Leg Cramps is a marker, and possibly contributor, to poor sleep and general health. Leg pain during pregnancy During pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, weight increases and its pressure comes on the feet. Secondly, the bled flow towards the feet also changes during this time and the reason for this is also weight. Thirdly, when the baby's head goes down and starts descending in the pelvis, there is a vein in the pelvis, there is pressure on the baby's head and all this causes cramp during pregnancy. How to avoid leg pain and cramps during pregnancy When we consume a good amount of water or fluids, then the chances of getting this end are less. Mother has to do exercises of calf muscles also. When there are cramps in the feet, then if someone is with us, then they should be asked to massage the calf muscles. To speak with hot water or hot bag. Sometimes ice bags can also be used. - The mother should consume bananas, kiwis or melons as these fruits contain minerals: calcium, magnesium and potassium to limit andorn. When you get these leg cramps again and again, then you have to take a bath by adding rock salt in hot water. The total amount of magnesium in the diet or medicines we take should be 300 mg per day. Abdominal cramps during 3rd trimester of pregnancy are quite common. They can be due to multiple reasons, the most common one being gastritis with indigestion. Probably an antacid can help to relieve the symptoms. Sometimes the abdominal cramps can also be due to constipation. So constipation has to be treated by a suitable laxative. Sometimes the cramps in the lower abdomen can be because of UTI and is common in last trimester because of stasis of urine. If diagnosed UTI has to be promptly treated with antibiotic course. Last but not the least the abdominal cramps might be an indication of labour pain. But these cramps usually come at frequent intervals with increase in intensity time to time and there may be associated finding of a white discharge or a blood stained discharge which may contribute the diagnosis of labour pain. This requires immediate evaluation and gynaec consultation. Travelling during pregnancy ideally should be restricted upto 34 weeks. After 34 weeks ideally it is not safe to travel unless it is an emergency.
